Microneedling: Everything you need to know

Microneedling; the best kept secret in skincare- or not so much! Microneedling has become increasingly popular over the years, and rightfully so! This device is so effective, it has the ability to break up the appearance of scars. more commonly, microneedling is uesd to rejuvenate and tighten the skin and smooth any imperfections on the skin. Here is everything you need to know. Get ready for your best skin, ever!

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment that involves a series of tiny needles that create small, controlled thermal and mechanical injuries or microchannels in the skin. You are numbed prior to the treatment, to avoid any discomfort. Your body’s response to the injury is where the magic happens. These tiny microchannels trigger your body’s production of collagen and elastin which translates to plump, smoother looking skin within days of your treatment. Microneedling is also used for acne and acne scarring, breaking up the scar tissue to fade any imperfections in the skin. Additionally, it fades fine lines and wrinkles, reverses sun damage and lightens any pigment on the skin, as well as providing amazing skin tightening benefits.

If you have seen the at home versions on the internet, it’s best to leave this treatment to the experts, as the angle of the needle is super important. If the angle isn’t exactly flush with the dermis, you can be left with scarring from the device and infections from the trauma. No thanks!

What to expect

Microneedling, from start to finish takes about an hour, with numbing time included. Our practitioner will numb your skin for about 20 minutes and then thoroughly cleanse your skin prior to the treatment. Next, your provider will apply a peptide and antioxidant rich serum that will hydrate your skin and begin the microneedling treatment. The great thing about microneedling with an advanced practice medical provider, at our clinic, is that they can treat to the deepest layers of your skin, so you get the most out of your treatment.

After the treatment your skin will be red and there may be some pinpoint bleeding, but because of the numbing time, you are very comfortable during the treatment. Microneedling itself will feel like you are shaving your face, with a little bit more pressure over areas that are bony, like the forehead and jawline and can feel more sensitive around the nose and eyes. After the treatment, our practitioners apply a post-treatment hydrating serum to help protect your skin after the treatment. Your skin will be red for the rest of the day and will be dry and feel tight for about a week.

What is my recovery like?

After the treatment, you will want to avoid exercise, use of the sauna or any heat of any kind for the rest of the day. The next day, most the redness is gone but your skin will begin to feel dry and tight. You will want to apply moisturizer and at this point, you can apply makeup. Swelling, redness and dryness is normal for 48 hours after your treatment and you will want to use gentle skincare until your skin is back to normal, usually, for about a week. Additionally, you will want to avoid the sun and wear sunblock, everyday for the rest of your life , TBH! 🙂 You can resume your retinol and any active products, when your skin is healed, which is usually about a week after your treatment.

When will I see any results?

The majority of patients see results immediately after treatment, and claim that their skin looks smoother, plumper and more hydrated with a natural glow. Depending on your skin concerns, you may need multiple treatments, for example if your skin has any scarring from acne, darker pigment or extensive sun damage, you’ll likely need multiple treatments. Your practitioner will come up with a treatment plan for you to address any and all concerns you may have.
